Elden Ring is a predecessor to the legendary Dark Souls franchise. It takes the complex, challenging, punishing nature of other Souls games and drops it into what feels like the most extensive open-world experience to ever come to gaming. From Software had some big shoes to fill with their other releases, and this time it seems their old shoes are too small to fit.

Story, Setting, and Characters

Like From Software’s other titles, Elden Ring’s story is obscure. Most of it is locked behind items, equipment, and eerie dialogue delivered by wretched avatars sprawled throughout this expansive world. However, its gist sees the world in a cyclical order of events.

Like Dark Souls, a hyper-powerful being doesn’t want the cycle to continue for one reason or another (most likely because it would mean their end). Regardless, a ring called the Elden Ring was shattered by the person who doesn’t want to commit to the cycle that involves his demise. So you, an undying tarnished, must recombine the ring, become the Elden Lord, and restart the process.

Elden Ring Game Features

The list of features for this game deserves its own article. This game’s main feature is the sheer amount of content From Software managed to fit in this one game. There is no way that anyone, without some guidance, can do everything in a single playthrough. Even if you had a guide, some events get canceled by the completion of others, so you’d still need a second playthrough to see everything.

If you’ve heard about Dark Souls, then you know how well the developers have mastered their interpretation of what it means to play an RPG. The amount of challenging bosses and creative enemies in this game is rivaled by no other title, and it's all mashed into a genuinely open-world experience. Players can do almost anything at any time, which makes this game feel larger than any other open-world game in this generation.

Reviews and General Information

Elden Ring currently has a fantastic Metascore of 96 with a good user score of 7.9. IGN has also stated that this is the easiest 10 rating they’ve given a game. For reference, the other 10-games are Super Mario Odessey, God of War, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

While newbies to the franchise bash this game for being “inaccessible,” others relish in the challenge, claiming that’s a massive part of what makes playing this game so rewarding. Couple that with the seemingly endless amount of exploration potential, and you have what may be the best game ever to be released in history.

Of course, any of the “Souls” games from From Software share the most similarities. Sekiro, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls all play the same save for minor upgrades from generation to generation. However, the most similar game to this outside From Software’s legacy is Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
