AQtion is a customized modern Q2Pro client bundled with improved AQ2 assets and the latest AQ2:TNG server code. In the late '90s when every FPS game had health pickups, rocket launchers, lasers, and miniguns, Action Quake decided to do something different: they went for Hollywood-style "realism". The weapons are based on real rifles, shotguns, and pistols, and the combat is fast-paced and brutal. AQ2 set the stage for Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, and every other "realistic" modern FPS that followed. But this isn't just a throwback to old times. It's still the perfect blend of semi-realistic and just plain fun. Unlike Counter-Strike's attempts to prevent bunny hopping, Quake 2 movement embraces it, gaining speed through carefully chained strafe-jumps and letting the player attempt trick jumps to reach difficult places. If you get shot without armor or fall too far, you'll need to bandage your wounds. Most weapons reload entire magazines rather than individual rounds so be careful with your ammo, though you can always drop your gun and grab one off a body, or kick one out of the hands of an enemy! There's little more satisfying than nailing someone with a throwing knife across the map, except maybe sending their body flying across the map with a point-blank handcannon shot. Personal preference: I recommend going to Advanced Video and changing Particle Style to None so the blood looks red, and disabling Cell Shading so the guns and player models don't look like cartoons.” Another user says, “A perfect example of justified nostalgia. Playing this game again after nearly a quarter-century has been an intense experience, with so many years of subsequent games it feels like opening a time capsule to an earlier period. You owe it to yourself to spend a couple of hours with this piece of gaming history, revisiting quirks and regaining an appreciation for pure gameplay as a contrast to today's upsold, incomplete, closed, artificially grindy alternatives.
